Following the path through Mount Aipos, one reaches the large village in the north-west called Volissos. It is 40 km from the capital of the island.
The village is built in an amphiteatrical style on a hill where a Genovese Medieval fortress reigns supreme. The view of the Aegean Sea - a mere 2 km away - is breathtaking. The plain between the village and the sea is abundantly covered in olive and citrus groves.
There is a regular boat route that connects the seaport of Volissos (Limnia) with Psara.
There is a large selection of either sandy or pebble beaches, the most popular ones being Lefkathia, Limnos and Managro which also have several taverns, restaurants and cafes.
For those who have a means of transportation there are a plethora of little-known uncrowded beaches at a short distance from the village such as Tigani, Elinta, Trachili, etc.
Volissos provides everything necessary to spend a perfect holiday. Telecommunication is good, there is an Automatic Teller Machine for currency withdrawals as well as: a post office, a national phone company office (OTE), a Health Clinic, Pharmacy, a Police Department, a hairdresser, several restaurants, taverns, cafes, pastry shops, variety stores, a butcher, and daily fresh-baked bread from the wood-burning oven of the village. Moreover, three times a week fishmongers and other mongers visit the village.
The natural environment of the village features a variety of landscapes combining mountains, plains, streams and rivers with beautiful beaches and picturesque bays.
The region lends itself to hiking and herb collecting, especially in the springtime.
Volissos allows the visitor to travel back in time and experience a lifestyle that is quickly disappearing.
